Imaginary extinction of fish
I have imagined a future in which fish no longer exist.
The figures emerge as a gesture against the very thing that caused the disappearance of fish.
In the past, fish were no longer perceived as beings. In a world saturated by terrible images, people have lost parts of their own sensitivity. Thus, torn-apart fish, with their wounds washed from blood, but visible, thrown away in piles, whose somewhat open big black eyes and mouths would create the impression that they would still be alive, could hardly impress anybody. Such an image could be subject of advertisement. People stopped noticing the vivid animal that once was, instead they only saw a food product.
Fish have disappeared because of the greed, excess and indifference of the majority of people.
Am imaginat un viitor în care peștii nu mai există.
Trupurile apar ca un gest împotriva a ceea ce a dus la dispariția peștilor.
În trecut, peștii nu mai erau percepuți ca fiind ființe. Într-o lume saturată de imagini teribile, oamenii au pierdut din propria sensibilitate. Astfel, niște pești sfârtecați, cu rănile spălate de sânge, dar vizibile, aruncați grămadă, a căror ochi mari negri și guri mai mult sau mai puțin întredeschise creau impresia că încă ar mai trăi, nu prea impresionau pe nimeni. O astfel de imagine putea fi o reclamă. Oamenii nu mai vedeau animalul viu ce fusese, ci un simplu produs alimentar.
Peștii au dispărut din cauza lăcomiei, exceselor și indiferenței celor mai mulți oameni.
Deep waters
The deep is neither a metaphor, nor an allegory. It is what follows extinction, and extinction itself is a scenario.
After the disappearance of fish would come the disappearance of all the other vertebrates, including man. But I wasn’t sure that I would get there during my lifetime, at how slow things were moving with this series of works. I started painting the deep water without thinking of what might be happening at the surface. I started with the two entity-shapes, the only reminiscence of the fish that once existed. Next was the polluted sea, completely lifeless. Unplanned, during work, I submerged in it a fluttering flag and later a boat. In the end, when I saw it finished, I realised that I had just submerged all the material and immaterial things that man has ever created.
Unexpectedly and without intention, that complete extinction that I had thought about in the beginning, but never thought I would get to experience, actually happened.
Now I am calm.
Next there are the seas.
Adâncul nu este nici metaforă, nici alegorie. Este ceea ce urmează după extincție, iar extincția este un scenariu posibil.
După dispariția peștilor urma dispariția tuturor celorlalte vertebrate, inclusiv a omului. Dar nu eram sigură că voi ajunge până acolo, în timpul vieții mele, la cât de încet lucram la această serie. M-am apucat să pictez adâncul fără să mă gândesc la ce se întâmplă la suprafață. Am început cu cele două forme – entități, singura reminescență a peștilor care au existat cândva. A urmat marea poluată, complet lipsită de viață. Am scufundat în ea, fără să îmi fi propus, pe parcursul lucrului, un steag fluturând, mai apoi și o barcă. La sfârșit, când am văzut-o gata, mi-am dat seama că am scufundat toate cele materiale și imateriale create de om.
Neașteptat și neintenționat s-a produs acea extincție totală pe care, deși am gândit-o de la început, nu credeam că o voi „trăi”.
Acum m-am calmat.
Urmează mările.
